History of the Native American Flute – Ancient Period

Author: bmusic  //  Category: American Band

We may never really know when and where the flute tradition first began in North America. Whatever its origin, the native flute became an important part of the musical heritage of North America. Most of the ancient predecessors of the native flute were elaborate derivatives of the whistle. Usually lumped together with the simple whistles, perhaps a separate category should be created and called something like “whistle flutes. ” This would include the multiple holed “whistles” made of bone and stone found in a variety of ancient sites throughout the country. Another ancient flute-like instrument was the Hopewellian panpipes, made of varying lengths of bone pipes sheathed in a copper band. The Hopewell culture also had single bone whistles, some with multiple holes. One made of a human bone seems to have been used in a fertility ritual. As we trace the origin of the most common Native American flute, that being the two-chambered duct flute, we encounter mystery. We know for certain that a flute tradition did exist, but when it began is unknown. Chronicles of travelers and explorers make mention of the existence of flutes. A native flute is first mentioned as far back as the 1500s in the chronicles of explorers who rampaged through both the Southeast and Southwest. They unfortunately do not describe the flutes – what they were made of, what they looked like or how they sounded. A native flute is again mentioned in the writings of numerous individuals traveling during the 1700s, primarily in the Eastern part of the country. Although many describe them as being made of cane or reed, they again do not describe what they looked like or how they sounded. However, we do have a few examples from this period and all are single chamber designs. It must be recognized that both the legends and the chronicles are discussing the native flute as it existed in the historic period, which began in the early 1400s. We can surmise from the early descendents of the previous cultures that flutes existed in ancient times, but since no ancient North American culture established a written form of their language, we must turn to artifacts to establish existence and dates. The difficulty in the eastern part of the country is that no organic objects have been found in their natural state. According to Dr. Vernon James Knight, Associate Professor of Anthropology at the University of Alabama and Curator of Southeastern Archaeology at the Jones Archaeological Museum, especially in the southeast, no flute artifacts have been found at any of the known sites from this period. He suspects that these flutes were made from perishable materials and did not survive. In the southwest, with its drier climate, organic artifacts of many types have been found, including native flutes. In 1931, archeologist Earl H. Morris led an expedition to the Prayer Rock district of northeastern Arizona. Accounts of Morris’s expedition identify the area as Atahonez Canyon. The valley is on the Navajo Indian reservation in Arizona. Morris’s team excavated 15 caves. The largest cave contains 16 dwellings and was later named Broken Flute Cave. His team unearthed thousands of artifacts. Among them were four wooden flutes that have been dated between AD 620 and 670. In one dwelling, two almost completely intact flutes were discovered. The broken pieces of two other flutes were recovered from another dwelling. All four flutes are constructed of Box Elder and had six holes. According to Clint Goss, who personally examined these flutes, the playing style is similar in principle to the Japanese Shakuhachi. “The mouth hole is largely covered by the lips (maybe 70%) and the player blows across the portion of the rim of the mouth hole that has not been covered by the lips. ” This indicates a design different from what we now know as the contemporary native flute. We simply cannot find the origin of the contemporary native flute design in ancient times. My name is Brent Haines, founder of Wood Sounds Flutes. As an engineer, my life is making people’s dreams into reality. As a maker, I feel greatly blessed to be able to create wooden Native American style flutes that allow people to turn their dreams and feelings into music magic. Over the years, I have helped hundreds of people begin playing the flute and have seen them create magical experiences. I have taught hundreds of people how to play the flute in five minutes or less, and I can teach you too.

South American Wedding Traditions

Author: bmusic  //  Category: American Band

The main South American communities include the Venezuelan, Argentinean and Chilean communities. The South American wedding traditions are similar though each community has its own interpretation of the cultures. In Toronto, couples celebrate such ceremonies with both the immediate and extended family members, as it is important in the establishment of strong family relationships or ties. They have cultural guidelines that assist in the organizing of the engagement ceremonies and they have their traditional ministers who unite both the groom and bride in holy matrimony. Before getting married, the priest normally confirms whether the bride and groom have informed their parents. The South American natives value their relations with the priests and this explains why they normally inform them subsequent to informing the parents. They believe that when a priest blesses the couple, they will experience good luck. Venezuelan Customs The Venezuelans in Toronto value family life and this is why they have to include every family member in the preparations. The groom has to seek permission from the father-in-law before making a proposal to a woman the groom intends to marry. The couples normally introduce each other to their parents when they are courting as an indication that they intend to marry each other. South American wedding traditions require both families to organize a civil ceremony where they inform all the other family members of their wedding plans. The civil ceremony normally takes place a fortnight prior to the main ceremony. Subsequent to the civil ceremony and the main service, the invited guests attend a reception at a selected venue. These ceremonies are vital to the Venezuelan community nonetheless, the spiritual service includes more festivity. As the main ceremony is in progression, the families exchange thirteen gold coins as a sign of good fortune and prosperity. They refer to these gold coins as ‘arras’. Many Venezuelan couples living in Toronto prefer to follow their wedding tradition. The newlyweds normally sneak from the reception venue as a way of bringing good luck to their marriage. Argentinean Ethnicity The exclusion of both the best men and bridesmaids is a common thing in the Argentinean community. The only people allowed to escort the couple are the groom’s mother and the bride’s father. The South American wedding traditions require the couples to exchange the rings during the engagement ceremony and their customs forbid them from doing so when making vows. Many Argentinean couples reside in Toronto and this is why most of them prefer to have their weddings there. Chilean Traditions Chilean couples residing in Toronto can organize a traditional engagement ceremony conducted by a minister who knows the cultures. A Chilean couple is required to exchange rings immediately after the groom makes a proposal. South American wedding traditions require a couple to wear wedding bands around their hands prior to making vows. After they get married, they place each other’s ring on the ring finger of the left hand. South American wedding traditions require that the bride dress in a white gown if she is a virgin. If she is not, they should dress in either cream, light yellow, or beige gowns.

The Age of Horse Culture: American Indian Horsemanship

Author: bmusic  //  Category: American Band

Before I begin, I would like to thank Donovin Sprague Hump, Black Hills State University Instructor, author and historian. Descendent of Chief Hump and the Crazy Horse Family. Also, Dave Reynolds for helping me to research this area and also contributing some of the historical literature used for this research. The Conquistadors passed an ordinance, soon after they arrived in the Americas, prohibiting any Indian from riding a horse. They encouraged the Indians to believe that the horses devoured human flesh. In 1582 Antonio Espejo was still telling the Indians “The horses were ferocious. . . ”.   However, it did not take the Indians long to realize that being men, like the Spaniards, they could also ride. As the ranches grew, the need for vaqueros, cow-workers, was filled by mounting the Indian serfs. Sante Fe became the most prominent place for distribution of the Spanish Mustang into the North American landscape and to the Native Tribes. In the beginning the Indians attained horses through raids on Spanish settlements in Sante Fe, El Paso and on the Rio Grande. They were also looting far in Chihuahua and Sonora in Northern Mexico. Although many tribes acquired horses, it was the tribes of the Plains that soon became the superb horseman and horse warriors that we hear so much about in history. The horse made them masters of the herds of buffalo that gave them food, shelter, bedding, tools, saddles, lariats and the core of their religion. The beginning of the 17th century brought a new era for both the Native American and the white men, for this date marked the introduction of the horse into Indian culture. Within a hundred years the horse population had grown into the tens of thousands among the nations of the Comanche, Crow, Cheyenne, Sioux, Arapaho, Kiowa, Nez Perces, Pawnee and Blackfoot. It had become a measure of wealth, trade and class, the main means to hunt buffalo and a tactical instrument of war. Riding at a full gallop with nothing more than a pelt cinched to the horses back they put to shame the generations of European horseman to follow in the West. The Indian and his Spanish Mustang were inseparable companions, sharing a deep sense of friendship and understanding that has not been equaled since. Blackfoot warfare was not aimed at the acquisition of territory or other tribes extermination but the capturing of horses from enemy tribes. Many of the the Blackfoot raids were carried out by poor families who were trying to better their lot. These raiding parties offered the training ground for the young warrior. They would go without receiving any horses but being repaid by learning the art of horse stealing. The horse raiding parties were lead by experienced men who had lead men into enemy camps and captured goodly amounts of horses; returning home with few casualties. Among the Comanche the horse added a new source of economic and political power, by controlling the access to the horse, a horse owner could control access to the buffalo hunt. The communal hunt of the pre-horse Comanche cultural gave way to the individual horse-mounted buffalo hunter. American observers among the Comanche, in the early 19th century, reported concentrations of horses numbering from 3,000 to 5,000, most with Spanish Brands. Successful warriors had from 50 to 200 horses each. In 1867 Labadi, an Indian agent reported 15,000 horses in Comanche camps on the Texas plains. Among the Sioux the horse was more than a mere animal it was viewed as “medicine” with supernatural potency. Owning a horse gave a man personal medicine, in hunting and in war.   Over time the horse became their symbol of wealth and a medium of exchange. The man with the fastest horse could kill more buffalo and so assumed a position different from the less fortunate. The horse became the path to economic stability and social position. Large herds of horses were not easily acquired. Horses were not successfully bred, though attempts were made among the Sioux. The chief method by which stock was replenished was capturing wild horses or stealing them from other tribes. The Crows raised horses, roped mustangs, rode magnificently and owned more horses than any other tribe on the Missouri. The Crow and the Blackfoot were constantly raiding each others horses. The Nez Perces became known for their outstanding strain of Spanish Horses known as Appaloosas; the name coming from the Palouse River of western Idaho and eastern Washington. Lewis and Clark wrote “ they are pied with large spots of white irregularly scattered and intermixed with black, brown, bey or other dark color, but much the larger portion are of uniform color with stars, strips and white feet. . . ”.   It is thought the Nez Perces were practicing selective breeding. Splotched horses occurred wherever Spanish Horses ran. Whether the Nex Perces began  raising them from a considerable collection of individuals or from only a pair or two is not known. Most of these horses were noted by Lewis and Clark to have Spanish brands. The Nez Perces were protected from raids by the mountains and this is what enabled them to do such breeding. In John C. Cremony’s book “Life Among the Apaches”, written in 1868, he writes “. . . after a successful raid, in which they have captured many animals, and having selected the best for riding, retire to some remote fastness to feed upon the remainder so long as they last. . . ”. This points up an important fact. That is, by this method they were doing selective breeding. Only keeping the horses that best suited their purposes and using the rest for survival. Since the Apaches were most likely the first Natives of North America, to obtain the horse, they used this process of selective breeding to foster the Spanish Mustangs qualities for endurance, speed, agility, and hardiness, the traits that their survival depended on. Although it may not have been a conscious decision its results obtained the same goals. Good horses were more plentiful among the northern tribes, this was because the northern ranges are more conducive to growth in livestock. It was the reason, later, the Texas cattlemen moved their Longhorns to Wyoming and Montana to fill them out and add weight. With the Acquisition of The Northwest Territory, the Northern Europeans of Eastern America began to move west and came in contact with the Plains Indians and their herds of Spanish Mustangs. As the 19th century closed, the horses of the plains Indians ceased to be straight out Spanish Blood as did many bands of wild horses. Taking horses where they could find them, the Indians of the Eastern Plains interbreed their stock with horses from the English-speaking Americans. J. Frank Dobie said “These horses were patriotically called “American”. They were not a breed, they were no more fixed in type than American dogs; they were bigger than the Spanish-Indian-Western Horse. To the majority of American patriots, bigness had become a synonym for superiority. ”The Age of Horse Culture lasted from the 17th century to the end of the 1800s. The Spanish Mustang reshaped the lives and culture of the Native Americans of the plains and they infused the history of the West with some of the most daring and courageous horsemanship ever known. Sadly, there is not enough recorded information of this period. Many of the Artist of the period were not very good at anatomy and did not depict the Indian horse accurately. The Native American had an oral history and when the wonder of photography came to the Plains the photographers seemed to disregard the horse as part of the Indian culture and society and instead concentrated on portraits of Indians in their regalia. We rely mostly on European accounts of what was seen or told to them by different tribes they encountered. The Native American and the Spanish Mustang were made for each other, they both had extreme desires for independence and survival and a love of the vast country that nurtured them.

I live on a twenty acre ranch in the Black Hills of South Dakota. I have two Spanish Mustang horses and a cat. I put work as a photographer and illustrator up at stock photo sites and manage SpanishMustangworld. com and a radio show at www. talkshoe. com/tc/28533 about Spanish Mustang Horses. I also help at healthyandliving. org to write articles about natural grass fed beef and community supported ranching.

Review: Spike Lee Tackles African American Stereotypes in Film

Author: bmusic  //  Category: American Band

What does it mean to be Black? This question has been asked throughout the African American community for generations. Does it mean that we should all share commonalities such as the music we love or the food we love to eat? Or are all of these simply African American stereotypes that have been given to us by others and sometimes our own people? Spike Lee’s new documentary Passing Strange, based on the musical that earned seven Tony Award nominations is an interesting look at African American stereotypes and how it affects a young African American man named Terry who is trying to find his way in life, and does not necessarily fit into the traditional African American stereotypes. Despite not being a film that is entertaining in the traditional sense, Passing Strange does an admirable job in tackling an issue that has been viewed as “dirty laundry” in the African American community for quite some time. Though classified as a musical, Passing Strange is definitely unique in that it uses a rock band, headed by the guitar-playing lead singer Stew, as the narrator to the story. The film focuses on a middle-class African American mother living in South Central Los Angeles in 1976, attempting to inspire her son Terry, an aspiring musician, to want more in life. The mother desperately wants her child to attend church, even though she does not go regularly, and the fact that they do not fit in with the Black Baptist congregation, despite sharing a similar skin tone. Though the church has typically been a source of strength and inspiration for people of color, according to many African American stereotypes, Terry is initially critical of the church, and the congregation in the film is referred to as a “Baptist fashion show. ” Terry doubts if God is real and says that church “ain’t nothin’ but rock-n-roll,” like the call-and-response structure of blues music, which peaks the interest of the aspiring musician. As the story unfolds, Terry starts to find himself more interested in his mother’s church, mainly because of his interest in a young lady in the church. However, when he attempts to pursue her she tells him he needs to “blacken up a bit. Not so much where you won’t be hirable, but you need more soul in your stroll,” playing on African American stereotypes of talking and acting White or Black. Terry finds inspiration to find himself in Europe like James Baldwin and Josephine Baker, at the urging of church member Franklin, who believes Black folks in America like them are simply, “Black folks passing as Black folks. ” Terry eventually moves to places like Amsterdam and Berlin to find himself as a person and as a musician. Although the film does a good job in the entertainment department, it really shines because it addresses serious issues like African American stereotypes in a lively way. Terry does not like stereotypical Black music and does not seem to fit in at the Black church. The protagonist simply wants to stop living a “double life” and find himself. Hopefully audiences will find themselves thinking about African American stereotypes, and how stereotyping one’s own people can negatively affect the lives of so many.

Hello From Orlando: An Orlando Jewel, The Wells Built Museum Of African American History And Culture

Author: bmusic  //  Category: American Band

After I had received a general overview of the history of the Orlando area in the Orange County Regional History Center, I wanted to delve a little deeper into the social history of the Orlando area, and the Wells Built Museum of African American History and Culture was going to give me a more in-depth look into Orlando’s African American history. To this day this area west of I-4 is primarily inhabited by African Americans and the difference in housing and facilities between this area and the downtown area is quite notable. As a matter of fact, the very name “Division Street” points to a distinct historical line of demarcation between black and white residential areas. The origins of the Wells Built Museum date back to a prominent local African physician by the name of Dr. William Monroe Wells who started building the Well’s Built Hotel in 1926 to provide lodging to African Americans during an era of segregation when accommodations were not available to them in other areas of Central Florida. Next door to the Wells’ Built was once the South Street Casino, a performance hall, which featured musicians that traveled the ‘Chitlin Circuit’ performing for audiences all over the country. The hotel opened with three storefronts on the first floor and hotel rooms on the second floor. Dr. William Monroe Wells was one of Orlando’s first black physicians and came to the area in 1917. Born in Ft. Gaines, Georgia, in 1889, Dr. Wells completed his medical training at Meharry Medical College. During part of WWII, Dr. William Monroe Wells was the only African American physician in Orlando. During segregation, white physicians did not treat African American patients. African American doctors, therefore, earned their money from people of their own race. He worked very hard to serve the growing African American population in Orlando. With the help of his assistant, Mrs. Josie Belle Jackson, Dr. Wells is known to have delivered over 5,000 babies in Orlando. He treated patients who suffered from pneumonia, influenza, scarlet fever and other serious illnesses before drugs like penicillin were introduced. Many of Dr. Wells’ patients were extremely poor. He treated their illnesses though they many times could not afford to pay his fee. This allowed them to speak forcefully against poor conditions that existed in the African American community without fear of losing their livelihood. Although African Americans were taxpayers like other residents of Orlando, they did not have access to recreational facilities, good schools, police protection, health care and other services that were provided to white citizens. This led him to build the South Street Casino and the hotel next door. Dr. Wells booked bands and other big name entertainers to perform at the South Street Casino. Many famous performers that we know today played at South Street Casino within the Chitlin Circuit. A few examples of these performers are: - Ray Charles - B. B. King - Louis Armstrong - Guitar Slim - Bo Diddley African Americans came from all over the surrounding areas to Orlando to shop and take in performances of popular musicians at the South Street Casino. After the performances at the casino, the artists checked in at the historic Wells’ Built Hotel. In its heyday, the Wells’ Built provided lodging for clientele such as Pegleg Bates, Ella Fitzgerald, Roy Campenella, Thurgood Marshall, and Jackie Robinson. The entertainers and athletes who frequented this establishment made it one of the most popular venues for African Americans in the South. Today the museum features over 6,000 square feet of display space. It retains the original hotel facade, a guestroom featuring authentic furniture, beading and decorations of the 1930’s, and also bears an original interior wall reflecting important architectural elements and designs unique to the period. Exhibition material collected for display include: official hotel documents, an original Negro League baseball jersey, photographs, artifacts, books, multi-media exhibits, slave records and other items of historic significance. Dr. Well’s home has been moved to the site of the Casino and will be restored and opened to the public. The Well’s Built Museum of African American Culture and History is located just west of I-4 near Church Street at 511 West South Street, Orlando 32801, tel. (407) 245-7535.
