Hello From Orlando: An Orlando Jewel, The Wells Built Museum Of African American History And Culture

Author: bmusic  //  Category: American Band

After I had received a general overview of the history of the Orlando area in the Orange County Regional History Center, I wanted to delve a little deeper into the social history of the Orlando area, and the Wells Built Museum of African American History and Culture was going to give me a more in-depth look into Orlando’s African American history. To this day this area west of I-4 is primarily inhabited by African Americans and the difference in housing and facilities between this area and the downtown area is quite notable. As a matter of fact, the very name “Division Street” points to a distinct historical line of demarcation between black and white residential areas. The origins of the Wells Built Museum date back to a prominent local African physician by the name of Dr. William Monroe Wells who started building the Well’s Built Hotel in 1926 to provide lodging to African Americans during an era of segregation when accommodations were not available to them in other areas of Central Florida. Next door to the Wells’ Built was once the South Street Casino, a performance hall, which featured musicians that traveled the ‘Chitlin Circuit’ performing for audiences all over the country. The hotel opened with three storefronts on the first floor and hotel rooms on the second floor. Dr. William Monroe Wells was one of Orlando’s first black physicians and came to the area in 1917. Born in Ft. Gaines, Georgia, in 1889, Dr. Wells completed his medical training at Meharry Medical College. During part of WWII, Dr. William Monroe Wells was the only African American physician in Orlando. During segregation, white physicians did not treat African American patients. African American doctors, therefore, earned their money from people of their own race. He worked very hard to serve the growing African American population in Orlando. With the help of his assistant, Mrs. Josie Belle Jackson, Dr. Wells is known to have delivered over 5,000 babies in Orlando. He treated patients who suffered from pneumonia, influenza, scarlet fever and other serious illnesses before drugs like penicillin were introduced. Many of Dr. Wells’ patients were extremely poor. He treated their illnesses though they many times could not afford to pay his fee. This allowed them to speak forcefully against poor conditions that existed in the African American community without fear of losing their livelihood. Although African Americans were taxpayers like other residents of Orlando, they did not have access to recreational facilities, good schools, police protection, health care and other services that were provided to white citizens. This led him to build the South Street Casino and the hotel next door. Dr. Wells booked bands and other big name entertainers to perform at the South Street Casino. Many famous performers that we know today played at South Street Casino within the Chitlin Circuit. A few examples of these performers are: - Ray Charles - B. B. King - Louis Armstrong - Guitar Slim - Bo Diddley African Americans came from all over the surrounding areas to Orlando to shop and take in performances of popular musicians at the South Street Casino. After the performances at the casino, the artists checked in at the historic Wells’ Built Hotel. In its heyday, the Wells’ Built provided lodging for clientele such as Pegleg Bates, Ella Fitzgerald, Roy Campenella, Thurgood Marshall, and Jackie Robinson. The entertainers and athletes who frequented this establishment made it one of the most popular venues for African Americans in the South. Today the museum features over 6,000 square feet of display space. It retains the original hotel facade, a guestroom featuring authentic furniture, beading and decorations of the 1930’s, and also bears an original interior wall reflecting important architectural elements and designs unique to the period. Exhibition material collected for display include: official hotel documents, an original Negro League baseball jersey, photographs, artifacts, books, multi-media exhibits, slave records and other items of historic significance. Dr. Well’s home has been moved to the site of the Casino and will be restored and opened to the public. The Well’s Built Museum of African American Culture and History is located just west of I-4 near Church Street at 511 West South Street, Orlando 32801, tel. (407) 245-7535. Jazz From Goa, India

Author: bmusic  //  Category: Jazz Band

HP-Tell us something about yourself.
Mumbai Goan CD-I want to be one of Goa, very soon. It has taken two important steps in my career. It is, after decades of playing everybody elses music my style of mine development and the biggest compliment I get these days is when someone recognizes my bassplaying they heard a melody somewhere, they call to confirm y. . Voila! Step one is probably the dream of all musicians to produce music of my own studio. A dream come true for me within this year, when I put my own state of the art studios Sangolda. I also installed an organization called Jazz Goa with the help of musicians and jazz lovers in Goa.
HP-What attracted you to jazz?
CD-Jazz is a big word, jjjaaaazzzzz should be explained! Seriously, I think that jazz is the most open, alive and evolving music that allows a musician to make it yourself. Most other forms of demand for music from a musician to follow trends and tradition or creating other hip now. While a jazz musician is heard about their business, and, finally, adoption of innovation with a different kind of jazz! Now we dixiland jazz, jazz, swing, bebop, jazz, funk, jazz, rock, jazz, pop, jazz, fusion, jazz, Latin jazz, Indo jazz, jazz-command. . . to cut a long story short, there is a jazz joint in all genres of music. And there will be a jazz joint in all genres that presents itself. I am a musician who is attractive to all that looks, feels, smells, tastes and even sounds like music, so naturally I chose jazz as I get to play this.
HP, which differs from other types of jazz?
CD-Jazz is the only form of music that encompasses all other forms and is no longer in American music. Today, jazz safely be called world music.
HP-what led you to become a jazz artist?
CD Of all the different genres of music I grew up listening, for some reason was always jazz that struck the strings in my view. I always heard the man, and very often the human factor in a great jazz version.
HP-Your favorite jazz Aristeo / tracks.
CD-You will expand this interview a thousand pages to answer that. My favorite of all time, but was a bassist Jaco Pastorius revolutionized bassplaying initial call right under, over, under and right through a song.
HP, which is credited to his credentials as a jazz musician?
CD-Everything I've worked with everybody and I like to work with someday.
HP-Where and how you train to be a jazz artist?
CD-I have no formal training in music, he learned music by listening to other musicians, assimilating what I liked and used subconsiously consiously or execution until it has developed its own style. Once I decided to play professionally, but I have not studied the technical aspects through the good books of music are easily available nowadays.
HP-How do you prepare for a concert?
CD-I sure there is enough soda to go with the whiskey. . . kidding! It depends, if it is a concert that would perform my own songs, my songs, then get the band to form and test the sound I heard in my head. As often turnsout, the contribution of the rest of the band takes the theme of a dimension never imagined. As you can see, the music is all about connecting and collaboration, do not think any of these major groups of man. They lie for financial reasons, not because I have nothing against. All is fair in love, war and music.
HP-Speaking of concerts, where and when it was first included how long you've been in jazz?
CD-Like most musicians I entered the music school of the university bands. After his studies in bands of five-star hotel residents whose repertoire consists mainly of jazz standards. I did that for ten years, playing music every night makes me a musician.
HP-What is the jazz scene in India, Goa, in particular?
The CD-jazz scene in India, Goa or anywhere in the world is the same. There is a group of artists and the audience niche that is growing all the time. The hope with the evolution of jazz open armed, will develop in the overall sound of the music.
HP-What were your highs and lows of his career so far?
CD-Max has always been to applause at the end of a runway Out, the minimum would be to see that the applause was really successful Sachin Sixers on the big screen next to the stage of Jazz by the Bay in Mumbai.
HP-How do you explain your role as a jazz musician in society?
CD-Jazz musician gives people a lot nicer than some interest page Other social costs.
HP Jazz Ensemble.
CD-Jazz is improvised music. Sometimes formal, sometimes orchestrated, sometimes free form and almost always spontaneously created.
HP-remarkable concerts /.
The CD-famous Hennessey XO jazz tour has always been with jazz artists, signed by U.S. label Blue Note. Last year, for the first time a jazz band off the label, by far, India has been chosen for this prestigious international tour. I was the bassist of the band. An unforgettable experience for sure. More recently, my group of Indo-jazz fusion "The Brown Indian Band has been approached to open for Sting's European tour this year. Fingers crossed on this point.
HP-Collaborations with other musicians.
CD-contineously I collaborate with musicians from around the world via the Internet and my website http://www. hullocheck. com
HP-I understand they were in different genres of music and has worked with several ensembles. We say more.
CD-As mentioned earlier, when it comes to music, they want everything. Genus name and chances are I've been there. You will find traces of almost all genres in my own music. There are very few musicians in the world today, equaling the number of bands and musicians that have worked.
HP performance today. . .
CD I make currently two contracts for the residents of Mumbai, the JW Marriott hotel in the afternoon and the Taj Lands End hotel at night. I also take TimeOff these two concerts to perform at concerts and corporate events in India and abroad. Thus, the average of sixty concerts a month!
HP-Her hobbies and interests. . .
CD "My main hobby and interest is my job today. Everyone works for a living, I play for mine. Someone once told me: "All games and does the job. . . makes me tick! "Seriously, I am very interested in improving the situation of musicians in Goa. I was one some time ago that you need to know the unfair treatment the most. My plan is the creation of Jazz Goa as an umbrella organization for jazz, but not only the talent of other art forms in Goa. To begin my study in Sangolda recorded and produced artists deserve. Jazz Goa will then launch from there the best in the world. Jazz Goa has already produced four audio CDs and a DVD which is available exclusively at Margao in Goa Vibes Music and online at http://www. jazzgoa. com
